Recruitment SEO: Alexa traffic ranking

After ranking the Irish recruitment agency web sites based on the Google PageRank and less known SEOmoz rank here is the one most marketers are familiar with: Alexa. What Alexa does exactly and how does it do it was a topic of a debate from the day Alexa have started publishing the traffic ranking scores. Some people like it, and some don’t. As with most of the ranking algorithms, it is usually the people featured on top that agree with Alexa’s results, and the ones ranked towards the bottom would have a different opinion. But that is the nature of every semi obscure ranking system. And in the world of SEO, nothing is really that straight forward!

What does Alexa web site ranking number mean?

What does Alexa say about their ranking number? They say that the Alexa number associated with each web site is its ranking in the overall global web traffic. So a site with the Alexa’s No. 1 is the web site with the most visitors, and as the ranking number grows the lower you are on the list of the sites based on the number of visitors. So the smaller the Alexa ranking score, the more traffic your web site has (according to Alexa).

So here is the same list of the 29 Irish recruitment agencies and the www.JobsBlog.ie within them so you can use it as a benchmark. There are some results that are just “screaming out” in this Alexa web site traffic ranking list. I’ll let you be the judge of it yourself:

Why are there two web sites that have no data in Alexa? I have absolutely no clue.

Now, if you compare the Alexa ranking above and the two lists we have looked at before: The Google PageRank and SEOmoz MozRank, there are some obvious similarities. It is especially obvious towards the tops of the lists. The same recruitment agency web sites feature the top spots, and there are no “Big Surprises” there. If your site is high in one listing, it is high in the other two as well.

CPL.ie: Top Recruitment Agency Web Site in Ireland

When your competition and independent industry experts point to your web site as the best there is very little more, that is more satisfying. Yes I know you are going to say what about the revenue and profits? OK, yes that too, but the first next best thing then is a clear industry recognition of a true winner. A real market leader, the one all the competition aspire to be. Here is Jonathan Campbell the most known recruitment trainer in Ireland today showcasing the elements of the CPL.ie web site in his training session, and also publishing statistics showing CPL.ie on top of the list of Irish recruitment agency web sites.

For two years I have worked on the CPL.ie web site. It was far from a leading spot when I took over the ownership of it. The worst thing was Google didn’t really ‘like’ it very much. As time went by, optimizing the site little by little, I watched Google Analytics every morning, and witnessed the traffic growing. In the first 12 months we got it 4 times higher. Yes, 400% traffic increase in a year on CPL.ie.

Funny enough we still couldn’t say – we (CPL.ie) are number one web recruitment agency site in Ireland. You simply do not know what traffic others are achieving. Every now and then I would get a recruitment manager of a certain industry saying –this and that agency are always above us in the searches! What do we do about it?! I could do nothing to prove them wrong. I only had our visitors data, and could show it growing, and growing quick.

In the second year of working on CPL.ie web site, and staring in the traffic figures every day, I realised we have actually done something. We have done something BIG. I simply couldn’t believe ANY recruitment agency could be having such traffic and especially number of applications made on the web site. We go to the stage where the CPL.ie would deliver more CV’s than paid jobs sites. Even within CPL there have still been those that believed that we are still below some other agencies. Some also believed we are just scratching the surface, and our traffic could be 100 times more based on ‘their estimates’. I love democracy and the freedom of speech but,…

Most importantly, the same growth we have achieved with the CPL.ie web site was exactly in the years that job seekers drastically changed their online behaviours, and simply stopped looking for jobs online as they have been before. All job sites have shown a decrease in web site traffic number in that same period when CPL.ie grown so much.

Last month I looked at requests for proposal from different recruitment agencies to develop their web sites. What was remarkable was the number of times CPL.ie was referenced in those documents. Yes, it made me feel proud about what we did with CPL.ie web site. Especially since now I can proudly say aloud: CPL.ie is the top recruitment agency web site in Ireland!

Advertised jobs numbers comparison

Here is a list of jobs advertised on the leading Irish job sites and the recruitment agency web sites.

Job Boards
Irish Jobs 12253
Recruit Ireland 3350
Monster 2969
Jobs 2800
Irish Times 1883
Employ Ireland 1339

Recruitment Agencies
CPL 1340
Brightwater 1291
Morgan McKinley 1178
Sigmar 671
Stelfox 627
Grafton 228
Manpower 183

Irish Jobs has by far the largest number of jobs. Actually they have about 10 times more jobs than the average competing Irish job site. Is there really that much jobs? Is that a real success story? When the numbers are so much off the scale, it always stinks a bit. Especially knowing that they own the Jobs.ie site that does so badly on the jobs numbers compared to the main site.

On the recruitment agency side there is a tight race at the top. CPL still has it top spot, while surprisingly a small company Brightwater is in second. They show more jobs on their site than a much larger company Morgan McKinley that is on the third spot. Are Brightwater really working as Busy Bees? Are they really filling 5 times more roles than companies like Grafton or Manpower? Again quite unlikely. Same as Irish Jobs web site above, the number are again just very off the chart.

CPL profits shrank 92%

Got an interesting tweet from Anne from CPL today. Pointing to the PR about CPL. It basically says that CPL is still in black. Pretax profits dropped 92% to €1.7 million for the 12 months to June, in what it called “better than expected” annual results.

Although he public knows them as the largest recruitment agency, they have actually laid off a lot of staff this year: from 483 to 333 over the year. A few good friends within them.

Irish Times and RTE have their full stories online.

Just one interesting fact. Goodbody analyst Dan Cavanagh said he was expecting operating profit of €4.9m for CPL in the year to June 30.

How wrong was he? :)

Anne Heraty, MD of CPL sponsors Green Dragon

If you know me at all, you probably know already that I am crazy about sailing. Ireland was one of the countries where the Volvo Ocean Race had a stop over this season. We had the best weather so far this year last weekend, and Galway was shining. The Volvo Ocean race is the second largest sporting event this country ever had, just after the Riders Cup.

green-dragon-volvo-ocean-race-galway

All this is due to the Irish entry in the Race – the Green Dragon boat. Millions have been invested in the boat by a number of Irish people, and there is a well known Anne Heraty from CPL who is within them and made it all happen.

I wish to thank Anne personally. I haven’t been on a Volvo Ocean Race boat before, and it meant a lot to me as a passionate sailor.

Career Builder is comming to Ireland!

Something strange happened today. First a well known Irish Recruitment agency called on the phone this morning and asks if we can post their jobs via our Multiple Jobs Posting service to the CareerBuilder job site. I found it strange because CareerBuilder is an old site and it used to be US oriented so far. So I checked and guess what? There is a CareerBuilder.ie Irish site.

cpl-jobs-web-site

I looked around and it has about 15 clients advertising jobs. Not overtly impressive, but hey!? It’s a start. CareerBuilder is in Ireland!

As the day goes by, I was checking some recruitment sites of the Irish recruitment agencies to get some inspiration, and guess what? Cpl has a new web site. I actually liked the old one better. But this one has all the right things that a recruitment site should have today: Video, blogs, and this giant footer made of gazillion links. I watched the video. And noticed that the vide on the CPL web site is an advertisement for the CareerBuilder! I still do not get what is he jobs site advertisement actually doing on a recruitment agency web site. Beats me!

Celtic Tiger or Shortage of Workforce in Ireland?

788 Employers are currently recruiting on Irish Jobs web site. Quit a few of them have a long list of jobs as well. From the employers list of 788 companies the majority has a few or more jobs advertised. The calculation shows quite simple that thousands of jobs are available in Ireland today.

Is it a Celtic Tiger all over again? It certainly does not feel so, with even the property prices ‘frozen’ for more than a year now. The unemployment rate is as low as it can be, so if there are thousands of vacancies in Ireland today it is clearly the serious shortage of workers currently in the country. How will that impact the Irish economy? Would we benefit from the increase of the import of “Brain Power”?

CPL

CPL Web Site - pointing to the http://alliancenurses.ie/The CPL recruitment agency is the leading recruitment agency in Ireland. They managed acquire a number of competitors, and also grow organically in some areas. The web site is a quite important thing for any recruitment agency. It represents you on the Internet, and the Internet is the channel for the majority of the communication a recruitment agency does. Jobs are listed on the Internet for job hunters and your services are displayed on your site to your clients. Every single email has a reference to the web site to help drive the traffic to the recruitment agency web site.

And jet this most important communication channel gets neglected. How? Well simply entering the web address without the ‘www’ part in it so just cpl.ie gives you the web site of: Alliance Nurses Agency. You can view the real copy also on their domain address: http://alliancenurses.ie/.

How did that happen? Most likely the configuration settings on the Microsoft IIS web server. I am guessing that the domain http://alliancenurses.ie/ is set “All undefined” option, and the admin did not specify the CPL.ie to point to the same where the www.CPL.ie is pointing.

Note: Yes I did call CPL and have let them know….Note: Yes I did call CPL and have let them know…. And guess what I am told: “That is OK, they are part of our CPL Group.” :)
