The jobs sites cannot really survive advertising the jobs in Ireland only. Simply there is not enough jobs in Ireland to sustain the business model of advertising jobs in Ireland only. There simply isn’t enough jobs here anymore. Irish Jobs are gone. Jobs are elsewhere today.

Recession? What recession? Not even this snow is stopping the new Irish jobs sites from popping out like mushrooms from the ground after the rain. THE fact that there is far more people being made redundant in hte last six months than the new positions created really does not bother no one in het Irish jobs board and recruitment industry.

Do not believe me? Hell here is another new jobs site for you. It’s called Jobs Spy. Of course the owner did not bother to put he company registration number or registered business address on the site as it seems to be the fashion lately with the new Irish jobs sites contrary to the rules from the Company Registration Office. Perhaps it does nto even apply to someone doing business as a sole trader – since he is not a company, so the CRO rules do not apply? :)

Who knows…

The only thing that is a fact is that if you are not certain where to publish a job in Ireland today, you have plenty of choice!

17 jobs in Ireland advertised in LinkedIN

LinkedIN obviously has some problems in the sales of their jobs advertising in Ireland. Currently there are only 17 jobs advertised in LinkedIN Jobs section. It is Mid January, the time the recruitment season is normally in the full swing in Ireland. Microsoft is there as they always are there present with a job or two, and funnily enough Dell is also advertising a job. Knowing how Dell is (un) popular with the hundreds of redundancies announced last week, it’s just a bit strange to see them advertising on LinkedIN. Especially since there are only 17 jobs in Ireland advertised at the moment.

This is the worst time for Jobs in Ireland according to the number of advertisements in LinkedIN. There used to be 40 to 60 jobs in last year or two almost all the time. To see the number of jobs dropping to 17 only… makes you wonder. Is it the recession? Or is it just poor sales team in LikedIN?

Monster is all about their new site. That isn’t actaully available. And will not be available this year. That does not stop them advertising it for the last couple of months. They started sounding a bit like Microsoft advertising their Vista. A lot of hipe, for a long, long time, but the result is…

Well let’s give Monster a chance to actaully show it to us. They promised it in Januarry next year (how crazy do you have to be to release teh new version of the job site in the month when job boards have the most traffic? If someting goes wrong, and things allways go wrong with the new releases, do you really need to show it to the most of visitors? :)

Well I guess it was a marketing driven decission, as Monsters decisions allways are, as oposed to the someones who knows how to run the operations.

Releasing a new jobs site in the year 2009, I would consider to be a failure if it does not have an element of the social networking. Is Monster smart and brave enough to bring the social networking in online recruitment on a large scale, as oposed to what LinkedIN is trying to do? Let’s wait and see ….

I guess some people will say I like writing about the Irish Jobs boards. The funny thing is that there is so many popping out, it is almost every week you hear about a new one. This is just in the last month or so:
TheJobs.ie, JobisJob.ie, Jobs2do.ie aka Spamers, Monster Finance, urHired

So here goes an interesting one. The Irish .ie domain seemed a bit too expensive so it is called SnazzyJobs.com. At least it is Hosted in Cork, so Google.ie might actually not ban it completely, if Google Webmaster Tools is to be believed.

Here are the first impressions:
1. Logo resembles any other stock logo sample, not really inspiring (as was the case with a number of the recruiters logos earlier this year).
2. Legal Stuff – company registration number and the registered address nowhere to be seen on the site.
3. Why publish so many pages to have only Coming Soon text on them?
4. The site is actually designed in some ’90-ies style. It is really hard to read the font in the menu. Green font with the green shadow on the green background? Here are some Design ideas: Jobs Board.
5. The code is not as messy as most of the jobs sites are actually, but a bit too much of that Java code all over. It is an interesting choice to have the jobs board in php, while all the leading job boards are the powered by the Microsoft .NET. Another interesting choice is
6. StatCounter as opposed to Google Analytics? Interesting choice. I would still use both, since the speed the Google Analytics is being developed at the moment, with stuff like Data Visualisation (Google Analytics Motion Chart), will overshadow most of the aspects of otherwise very useful StatCounter.

You need to be brave to show your price list online where there is nothing really anyone can buy for less than a thousand euro. It could actually be used as a company slogan:

There seems to be some 250 jobs advertised. Considering the time of the year and the (econ)comic situation in the country it is not bad really. There is also 2 jobs advertised in the last 7 days, so the site is not dead!

But honestly it will not be much more if some serious effort is not applied. The designers have decided to ignore a few important facts. SEO and Usability. The URL’s look like this:

To find the job search you need to click on some well hidden green button on the green background. And that button is one the single page on the site? Perhaps this is a part of the screening process: If you manage to apply – you must be a smart person, so we will look at your CV!

And,… you also need to create and account with Snazzy Jobs to be able to apply for the job. That last hurdle in the application process will definitely go well with the applicant. If banks and governments are losing the personal data, should I be leaving it on the web site that even does not confirm the company registration number required by the CRO?

Recruitment SEO 101: Keyword Analysis

Any SEO Consultant will tell you that a decent SEO project should somewhere in its starting phase have a step called Keyword Analysis. Unfortunately different people have a quite different idea what exactly does the Keyword Analysis mean. Some mean that it is about finding the most relevant keywords, some that it is about the number or keywords, and the rest arte somewhere in between.

Google has a quite easy to use Keyword Suggestion Tool. Here are the keywords that Google will ‘suggest’ as a similar and relevant search keywords to the term ‘Jobs’.

I’ll leave up to you to draw your own conclusions about the suggested keywords. Are those really relevant? Too many? Too few?

Hum…. A bit unusual approach for the Jobs Board. One would assume a lot of people visiting the web site, but Job2Do obviously have slightly different approach?

CV Magnet or how NOT to advertise a job?

What do you do when you purchase too many job slots on a job board? You use them and fill with the duplicates of the jobs you need to fill or write a generic job spec for the type of the jobs you are hiring for, and publish those.

Duplicates, Duplicates, Duplicates…

The advantage in having the same job published exactly the same more than once on a job board is very low. In taking some time and changing each copy so that it has a unique title, and quite different job description will generate more applications, but will also result in a lot of duplicate applications. (you asked for it!)

Speculative Positions

If you are recruiting for a position where you require a large number of the staff with the similar skills, and they tend not to stay that long with you (students, etc), than you need to have the same job advertised al all times on the job boards.

Just a note on the job title advertised as ‘Speculative Positions’: Putting the ‘Speculative Positions’ as a title of a job advertised on a jobs board will not really do you any good. An DBA Guru is far more likely to click on a job that includes a word DBA than on a job titled ‘Speculative Positions’.

CV Magnet

If you want to get a large number of the CV’s for the job published, just write a loose Requirements. Many job seekers use the Job Requirements to ‘filter themselves out’. If you write 6 separate requirements, and one is ‘6 years industry experience’, you might lose someone how has all the other five but only 5 years experience. And that is certainly no recruiters intention.

If you remove the requirements completely, you just mark them as the ‘Desired Candidate Requirements’, or just note that the candidate should have at least 2 of 6 listed, you will increase the number of the applications, while not drastically decreasing the overall quality of the job applications.

In the Irish market – that is dominated with the recruitment agencies advertising on the job boards and the traditional media, would you see such model as a ‘workable’ one? The most agencies will try to get the candidate who is slightly overqualified, to impress the employer with a quality of the CV. Also they try to match the same role title – of the past and the future role of the candidate.

So in a sense – the recruitment agencies her in Ireland do all the opposite to what Larry is suggesting above.

I personally like the marketing processes applied to the recruitment model. I can see it work beautifully, especially with the lower level jobs in Ireland.

American companies are not in Ireland for tax reasons

It’s official: American companies are NOT in Ireland for tax reasons.

Well, at last according to John Roberts the CEO and co-founder of SugarCRM confirmed yesterday:

John Roberts, CEO and co-founder of commercial, open source, Silicon Valley firm SugarCRM, which has its European headquarters in Dublin, will be heading to the inaugural Irish Web Technology conference on Thursday not just to give a talk but also to scout around for several new employees.
“We made a bet on Ireland and Dublin over a year ago in the hope there would be sharp engineering talent here and it has been great so far. This conference is validation that Ireland gets web technology,” said Roberts.
Locating European headquarters in Dublin wasn’t just for tax reasons, said Roberts, it was more due to the fact that as well as having a strong, emerging tech workforce, the energy in Dublin city is much like that of Silicon Valley and the cultures match well: both have a very progressive state of mind.

So just if you have been wondering why is SugarCRM here in Dublin? It is NOT for the tax reasons, it is the strong tech workforce, etc, etc.

Ehm,… and 50% of the techies being interviewed for new jobs in Ireland today are ‘imported’ mostly from Eastern Europe.

We seem to have managed to create an interesting formula really. We market Ireland as a cool place to live to the Eastern Europeans, and lure American corporate to set up here for the tax reasons. The result is that we get the American corporations here hiring Poles, Ukrainians, and the rest of them. It is a win-win-win scenario really:

  • Americans pay less tax
  • Eastern Europeans emigrate to the ‘Heaven’
  • We get more jobs in services industry around those new companies, and since Poles have to live here, the house prices are high, and the building industry is still thriving.
  • I wonder what would David McWilliams say to that…. :)
